Légende no 1

The landscaping around the statue is well-done. It gives the impression of being more massive than it really is, I think!

great statue but the tree oh my...It has to be very very old!

Annie a dit…

Atlas seems like "everyman", or at least the mythological version of everyman.

Looks old indeed.
But why was it located under a tree?

Cergie a dit…

It's a lovely statue and so beautifully displayed. I'm glad you give so many angles to admire it from.

Cergie a dit…

The fact that he has lost his arms gives the whole an entire new vision. ans the hand is attached to the sphere...alone...without a body that supports it...hands working alone...

So the moral of the story is not to work too hard or we will die too soon! I like that;-)

Cheltenhamdailyphoto a dit…

He certainly looks exhausted. I like the way this statue takes the form of the trunk of the tree too.

I get out of breath, when I look at the statue, really impressive.
( I thank you for your postcard and your wishes! I appreciate them. )

Anonyme a dit…

Poor guy needs his arms! That's quite a feat without them.

Ioanna a dit…

I also wonder why is situated under a tree.
Well, acording to the Greek mythology Atlas is one of the 12 Titans(giants with supernatural abilities).
Atlas was punished from Dias to carry on for ever the celestial dome (the vault of heaven)because he was fighting against the Gods of Olympus during the fight of Titans!

Anonyme a dit…

It looks like one of the uncompleted Michelangelo statues.

Interesting!
I have the same question as Edulabbe.

Olivier a dit…

Thank you for your comments.

To answer tanty and edulabbe: the statue is under this tree, for a reason, this tree protects this old statue naturally.

Interesting information and an amazing work of art. I am glad the old tree is protecting him.

Thanks Olivier for the answer.

i would have died of exhaustion too, if i were to carry the bags of corn.

'atlas' would need those 'tempur' pillows to have a good night's read after carrying the globe on his back :-) haha...
